Hello, everybody. Registered Holistic Nutritionist here, Meaghan Esser with ITL Health. Will magnesium citrate clean you out? This is a very common question we get on the topic of magnesium citrate and what it might do to the bowels. So in short, magnesium citrate does help you go to the bathroom. It can help constipation if you are dealing with that issue.
Now it doesn't necessarily just clean anybody out and if you take magnesium citrate it doesn't mean that you're going to get completely loose bowels and be cleaned out. Magnesium citrate can help draw water to the bowels and it also helps relax the muscles. So, the bowel is a muscle, it doesn't necessarily move like normal muscles but it does have the peristalsis motion. And sometimes it needs to relax a bit more, sometimes it needs to have water drawn to it more.
So, if you took a lot of magnesium citrate at once, yes, it would clean you out. If you're struggling with constipation, it's even recommended to take a little bit of extra magnesium citrate until bowel tolerance to make sure that you're not stuck in that constipated state as it is not healthy. However, if you are a healthy individual, and you are taking a proper amount of magnesium, you don't need to expect that magnesium citrate will clean you out.
Magnesium citrate is a great form of magnesium. We sell the Ionic Magnesium Citrate which is a specific proprietary blend that helps the magnesium absorb straight into your body. And essentially predigest it so that your body doesn't have to so that you can get the magnesium amount that you are aiming to take. And your body can go to work using it immediately without trying to first convert it into a usable form.
