Does Coffee Deplete Magnesium?
Hi everyone! Meaghan Esser, Registered Holistic Nutritionist with ITL Health.
Today we're going to answer the question. Does coffee deplete magnesium? If you're anything like me, you love that warm cup of coffee in the morning. Unfortunately, the short answer is that coffee does deplete our magnesium. There are several studies that show the reasons why. Number one is that it causes an increased urinary output of Magnesium. So, when you're drinking coffee, your body pees out more magnesium.
Another reason is that it reduces your intestinal absorption of magnesium. So, when you're drinking coffee it's harder for your intestines to absorb the magnesium from your diet. Another reason why it might deplete your magnesium is that coffee artificially raises your cortisol in your body. Cortisol is a stress hormone, and magnesium is needed to manage stress. When we're stressed, we use more magnesium in order to process those hormones and get back into a relaxed state. So, if you're drinking coffee, which revs you up, you need more magnesium to balance you down.
Now, if you're concerned about coffee depleting your magnesium. One thing I would say is look at how much you're drinking. If you enjoy one cup of coffee a day. I would call that moderation and balance, and I don't think there's a lot wrong with that. I know I won't be giving up this cup of coffee because it might deplete my magnesium. However, if you're concerned about your diet remember that sugar depletes your magnesium, alcohol depletes your magnesium. And if you're not properly cooking your food, it can deplete your magnesium as well, such as if you boil your vegetables, and you throw out the water, a lot of magnesium is in that water. So, save it and you can then get more magnesium from your diet.
If you feel like you need more magnesium and have difficulty getting it in your diet, or you don't want to stress about where it's coming from or you don't want to give up your vices. We highly recommend supplementing with PrizMAG Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate Capsules, or if you prefer a Powder MAG365 Ionic Magnesium Citrate. Both of these supplements are highly bioavailable.
