Can I get enough magnesium through food?

Can I get enough magnesium through food?

Video Transcript:

Hello, everybody. I'm Meaghan Esser, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist with ITL Health. A very common question people ask is, "Can I get enough magnesium through food?" The answer is yes, you can, but you have to be very deliberate about it.

We always recommend getting nutrients through whole foods. Some people prefer not to take supplements or medications and would rather get everything from their diet. However, there are a few challenges with magnesium.

Firstly, due to inorganic farming practices, our soil contains about 30% less magnesium than it did 50 years ago. This means our plants and foods also have less magnesium.

Secondly, many magnesium-rich foods are high in oxalates. Oxalates have two negative charges, while magnesium has two positive charges. When oxalates leave our body, they often bind to magnesium and flush it out, preventing absorption.

To avoid this, it's important to learn how to properly cook foods and know which to eat raw. For example, leafy greens are high in magnesium but also in oxalates, so it's better to cook them. Whole grains, nuts, and seeds should be soaked and cooked properly to reduce oxalates.

Another issue is that magnesium is depleted during food processing and cooking. When boiling leafy greens, for example, magnesium can leach into the water. One solution is to drink the cooking water or use it in soups. Eating certain foods raw can also help, but remember the oxalate issue.

Processed foods often have less magnesium than whole foods. For instance, quick oats contain less magnesium than whole oats due to processing.

Magnesium is a cofactor in about 80% of the body's processes, making it crucial to get enough. Given the difficulties of obtaining adequate magnesium from food alone, we highly recommend taking a magnesium supplement. Research suggests that 80% of the global population is deficient in magnesium, highlighting the challenge of getting enough from diet alone.

We recommend well-absorbed magnesium supplements, as not all magnesium is created equal. Our MAG 365 Ionic Magnesium Powder and PrizMAG Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate Capsules are excellent options.
