Can I Take Magnesium On An Empty Stomach?

Can I Take Magnesium On An Empty Stomach?

A very common question we get asked is: Can I take a magnesium supplement on an empty stomach?

The answer is yes. Magnesium is generally gentle on the stomach and does not require food to be properly absorbed.

Many people also prefer taking magnesium before bed because it supports a good night’s sleep. Going to bed with an empty stomach can further aid the sleep process, which is another reason evening magnesium supplementation is popular. If you hear someone say magnesium “upsets their stomach,” they’re usually referring to the bowels or intestines, as those terms are often used interchangeably.

Some Magnesium Forms Are Harder on the Bowels

Certain forms of magnesium are more likely to affect digestion than others. Magnesium oxide is a very inexpensive form, but it is poorly absorbed. Because of this, much of it passes through the digestive tract and is excreted through the bowels.

ITL Health offers an Ionic Magnesium Citrate (MAG365) that many people tolerate well because it is highly bioavailable in the body.

However, if you have a very sensitive system, you may prefer a form of magnesium that is absorbed more slowly, such as magnesium bisglycinate. Because magnesium bisglycinate is bound to the amino acid glycine, it tends to be gentler on digestion and less likely to draw water into the bowels. This slower, more controlled absorption is why it is often better tolerated by individuals with sensitive digestive systems.

A Gentle Option for Sensitive Digestion

PrizMAG is a pure magnesium bisglycinate. It contains no fillers and is a great option for those concerned about digestion and magnesium supplementation.
