Vitamin D Plus FAQ
Through our extensive research on various types of capsules, we concluded pullulan is the purest capsule on the market. It is vegan, water soluble, and made from fermented tapioca. We prefer pullulan to a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsule, which is a propylene glycol ether of methylcellulose — essentially a plastic. For more information about pullulan, see our Product Purity FAQ.
Absolutely! Like all our products, Vitamin D Plus is 100% vegan.
We manufacture all our products in GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) facilities that are audited yearly by a third-party auditor to ensure we are in compliance with current rules and regulations. Additionally, each batch is tested to ensure we are offering our customers the high-quality products we promise them. We regularly have a third-party company test our products for purity.
There is no established upper limit for vitamin B12. It's crucial to consider two points: (1) No adverse effects have been linked to high vitamin B12 intake from food or supplements in healthy individuals, and (2) vitamin B12 is water-soluble, so any excess is excreted by the body. If you're taking additional capsules of our Vitamin D Plus for higher vitamin D levels, the extra vitamin B12 is generally considered safe. However, it's essential to be mindful that you might not require more than the recommended dose of Vitamin D Plus (2 capsules). We always advise testing your vitamin D (and vitamin B12) levels after a few months of supplementation.
Our vitamin D3 is carefully extracted from lichen, a complex, vegan-friendly organism that is a combination of fungus and algae. Lichen has the unique ability to produce vitamin D in the natural form of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is both bioavailable and gentle on the body. All plant-based vitamin D comes in the form of D2, but lichen is not a plant. Besides cod liver oil, another popular form of D3 is lanolin which is extracted from sheep’s wool. Because sheep are usually sprayed or dipped in toxic pesticides to keep their wool from attracting insects and/or getting rot, we feel lichen is a purer product. Most importantly, it doesn’t go against our vegan ethos.
We all know that vitamin D is critical for healthy bones, immune function and more, but a lesser-known fact is that vitamin D needs cofactors – specifically magnesium and vitamin K2 – in order to be properly utilized by the body. This is one key reason we created Vitamin D Plus: a formula that combines vitamin D with the necessary cofactors to ensure you are getting the most out of your vitamin D supplement. You can read more in our article “Vitamin D Needs Magnesium. Here’s Why.” It’s interesting to note that we initially created Vitamin D plus in response to a study conducted on the combination of vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin B12 administered to older COVID-19 patients. The results of this study were significant, showing that only 17.6% of patients on vitamins D & B12 and magnesium required oxygen therapy and/or intensive care support, while 61.5% of patients not on this combination required oxygen therapy and/or intensive care support. What is particularly fascinating about this study is the dosage administered to test subjects. High doses of nutrients were not used; the combination included 1,000 IU of vitamin D, 150mg of magnesium, and 500mcg of B12, showing that when nutrients are used synergistically, mega-dosing isn’t needed to bring levels up. We used this as a basis for our formula.
