Hello everyone, Meaghan Esser, Registered Holistic Nutritionist with ITL Health. We had somebody write in and ask the question, is magnesium good for AFIB?
AFIB is Atrial Fibrillation, which is when you have a heart arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat. This can be a problem because it can lead to heart failure, blood clots, or stroke, so it's definitely something you want to keep your eye on. If you're concerned you have AFIB, you need to go to your doctor and ask about serious issues like this. If you want to supplement, you also need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist to make sure that you can supplement with your condition or medications you're taking.
That being said, magnesium is very good for the heart. There was a study done where they looked at almost 1,200 patients with AFIB. They had them supplement with 300 milligrams of magnesium every day. And in 82% of that test group, the results proved very good.
Magnesium helps your heart because your heart is a muscle, and your muscles need magnesium. Calcium helps with muscles contracting, magnesium helps with them relaxing. So, you can imagine if you are deficient in magnesium, first of all, you need all the muscles in your body to relax including your heart. It also helps regulate the blood pressure in your body. Magnesium helps regulate the blood pressure. So, that is also an important part of heart health.
There are a lot of studies about the greatness of magnesium and heart health. And there was even one that highlighted that magnesium deficiency seems to be a greater risk than high cholesterol when it comes to heart health.
And if you prefer capsules, this one is a very well absorbed magnesium chelate where it goes directly into your cells rather than being absorbed by your body.
