Oral magnesium supplements may be an effective tool in managing ADHD symptoms. 

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a widely recognized but often under-diagnosed condition affecting both children and adults. Initially met with skepticism, attitudes towards ADHD have shifted drastically in the past decade, with more recognition of it as a condition, and various treatment options becoming available.

ADHD is characterized by symptoms such as hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsiveness, which can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships. It's the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder in school-aged children.

Here's the good news: Studies have shown that children with ADHD often have low levels of magnesium.

Research has indicated a link between low magnesium levels and ADHD. In fact, studies show that a majority of children with ADHD have magnesium deficiency. One study of note observed lower intracellular magnesium levels in children with ADHD compared to typical values. Decreased magnesium levels were also associated with increased hyperactivity and attention problems.

Here's the good news: While studies have shown that extremely low magnesium levels can lead to hyper-excitability, they also indicate it may be reversed with magnesium supplementation. Magnesium supplements, alongside other nutrients such as vitamin D and vitamin B6, have been linked to improved learning and behaviour.

In a clinical study, children with ADHD who received magnesium supplements along with standard treatment showed improvement compared to those who received only standard treatment. 

If you or your child displays signs of ADHD, it's advisable to undergo a comprehensive assessment to confirm the diagnosis. Typically, doctors prescribe a combination of therapies, including behavioural, occupational, cognitive, and psychotherapy. Parent management training, schoolteacher training, and school interventions may also be suggested. Additionally, an increasing number of parents explore complementary treatments for ADHD, with nutritional therapies being common, often focusing on a diet rich in complex carbohydrates and protein.

Magnesium for ADHD
